You Had Me At Merlot

Mer·lot:/mərˈlō/

Merlot is most commonly produced from grapes that come from the Bordeaux region of France. I particularly enjoy a nice fruit-forward merlot that comes from Sonoma Valley. The country or region where the wine is produced can make a huge difference in flavor. Merlot is a great red wine to experiment with if you are just beginning your adventure into the wonderful world of wine tasting. Depending on your wine style, you can find a merlot that suites you. Merlots from France tend to be earthier and the tannins are more pronounced. On the other hand, a California merlot like the three pictured above are more fruit-forward with aromas of blackberry and cherry. As you may know, Northern California is known for their great variety of grapes and ability to produce superb wines. As merlot was one of the first red wines I was introduced to, my sweet love affair with merlot began at the young age of 21. Sure, I have only been drinking wine for 3 years, but within that time my palate has matured and I feel as though I have matured as well. For example, when I first began drinking wine I had a tendency to lean toward white wine that was sweeter in nature. As my palate has matured, I have began to enjoy a more full-bodied wine with darker fruit flavors.

All three of the wines listed above were great; however, my favorite was the Mc Manis, Not only does this wine work well in my budget as a college student, overall it is a fantastic merlot. I make sure to bring a bottle (or two) when attending dinner parties or girl’s nights because this is a bottle of merlot everyone will enjoy.

If you are interested in trying any of the wines listed or want to try something new, I suggest checking out Liquorama in Upland. They have an extensive wine selection ranging from California merlots to sauvignon blancs from New Zealand. They also offer wine tasting on Wednesdays, which is a great opportunity to discover new wines.

I hope my new online friends take the time to discover all of the delightfulness merlots have to offer. Unfortunately, this college girl has to say good-bye for now as I have plenty of wines to explore and papers to research for.
